Classic US sitcom set for UK remake – but fuming fans brand it a ‘terrible idea that’s doomed to fail’
A UK remake of the iconic US sitcom Cheers is currently in the works – but fans are already fuming that the reboot is a ‘terrible idea doomed to fail’.
The beloved American comedy series – which aired from 1982 to 1993 on NBC – will be reassessed in a fresh, new British adaptation, Deadline reported.
The iconic show, which spanned 11 seasons, starred A-listers Ted Danson, Shelley Long, and Woody Harrelson.
Working on the script is English screenwriter Simon Nye, known for his works on Men Behaving Badly (1992) and The Durrells (2016).
Fans were left very unimpressed with the news, taking to X – formerly Twitter – and calling for ‘more new and creative ideas’.

They fumed: ‘This is clearly a terrible idea. And will fail. There are a zillion new scripts out there. Give one of them a go’;
‘Just leave it alone’;
‘Just make new things, please’;
‘Ah yes, I distinctly remember scratching my head, unable to follow this obscure foreign comedy’;
‘Aren’t they a bit old? Leave it alone. Viewers want original ideas’;
‘Naah, UK is great at making original stuff, especially when it comes to tv. Let’s not turn everything in it to a rubbish America’;
‘To paraphrase Richard Herring, they’d better put a Rodney in it. The American version of Men Behaving Badly was atrocious (even by Rob Schneider standards) so there’s no reason this should work, and it won’t’;
‘Please don’t. Why is this even a consideration? I certainly wouldn’t be watching it’;

Yet someone agreed to disagree, hailing Simon, 66, as a ‘great writer’ and putting faith in the upcoming reboot

‘The attitudes of Cheers in the 80s are very different to the attitudes of today, so there’s a massive amount of work to be done around taking inspiration from the original characters but creating something fresh.’
