Country hitmaker John Legend teamed up publicly for the first time at Sunday (April 5) evening’s ACM Presents: Our Country special, performing their brand new duet “Last Time I Say Sorry.”

Brown introduced the song by bemoaning the weirdness of not getting to play the collab (which dropped two days earlier) properly on the ACMs stage, but expressing gratitude that “I get to call one of my good buddies” from the comfort of his own home — phoning Legend via his television. The two sang the sincerely apologetic ballad from their respective houses, with Legend of course providing the piano accompaniment.

On the song, Legend sings about fighting with his love on New Year’s Eve (“Broken hearts and shattered champagne/ We both don’t want to feel that again”), while Brown promises to show contrition for his misbehavior through more than his words: “So I swallow my pride to see it from your side/ I promise that I’ll do the best I can do.” The chorus peaks with both vowing, “The last time I said sorry/ Is the last time I’ll say sorry to you.”

“We just started talking about our relationships,” Brown had previously told Gayle King on CBS This Morning about how the song came together. “Usually the guys in the relationship will say sorry and then turn around and do it again — and me and John were both like, ‘That’s the worst feeling in the world.’”
