Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, recently opened up about dealing with a health scare ahead of Thanksgiving. The Reddit co-founder revealed that he had undergone surgery but was doing fine now.

Serena Williams and Ohanian have been a power couple in the tennis world since 2015, after they met in Rome. The couple got married in 2017 and share two daughters together. While Williams was still playing, her husband became a familiar face in the stands, cheering her on.

The duo has always been vocal about their relationship and often share the ups and downs of their everyday life with fans. Recently, Alexis Ohanian took to Instagram to share that he had gotten some nodules in his thyroid surgically removed while narrating the story of his mother’s experience with cancer.

“After tracking some suspicious nodules on my thyroid for the last 4 years, I recently got half of it surgically removed. The nodules were getting bigger & the latest biopsy revealed they’d very likely turn cancerous. My mom had breast cancer around this age (41) and then ultimately died from brain cancer a decade or so later. I hate cancer.”

He went on to explain that the surgery went well, and he was grateful for his health this Thanksgiving,

“I wasn’t gonna take any chances; the surgery was smooth and I’m extra grateful this Thanksgiving because I got the call this morning that my now-removed-half-of-thyroid was indeed full of some gnarly nodules that were very likely to become cancerous. The worst part tbh has been not being able to lift for 2 weeks but big fella will be back at it next week and I took my girls to Disney World this week so life is wonderful.”

Ohanian ended his statement by encouraging fellow men to make regular doctor visits.

“To my fellow, men – make those doctor’s appointments especially if y’all are dads. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone”

Like her husband, Serena Williams has also been vocal about her journey with her health. In May earlier this year, she revealed that she noticed a lump on her neck during a routine checkup, with an MRI later revealing that the lump was a branchial cyst.

While a biopsy confirmed the lump was non-cancerous, Williams eventually had to undergo surgery as the cyst began to grow. In October, the tennis star rued missing major updates as she dealt with her health, writing on X,

“So many things I missed like @glamourmag Woman of the Year awards, @RafaelNadal retirement 😢 and I am still recovering, but getting better. Health always comes first.”

Serena Williams is widely regarded as one of the best tennis players to have taken to the courts. In her long and storied career, the American claimed a combined total of 39 major titles and spent 319 weeks ranked No.1 in the world.
