‘The Price Is Right’ Contestant Throws Brutal Shade At Drew Carey And His Career
If there’s one thing to know about The Price is Right host Drew Carey, it’s that the comedian certainly knows how to take a joke.
Carey was in for a surprise during Tuesday’s (July 2) episode when third-year Ph.D. student Lillian Brown took the stage to school him.
Brown was enjoying a successful run on the show when Carey pointed out that her Ph.D. from Northwestern University may be giving her a leg up.
“We might as well not even keep going but . . . OK, OK. You have a Ph.D.,” he said to her.
He then asked, “I was thrown out of college twice. What’s the opposite of a Ph.D.?”
Brown promptly replied with a brutal diss against the Price is Right host. “A talk show host,” she said.
Carey couldn’t help but laugh along with Brown and the Price is Right audience. “You know what? I’m not smart enough to be a talk show host,” he admitted after keeling over with laughter.
The game show host has become known for his banter with the contestants.
Speaking to TV Insider recently, Carey praised the show’s live audience, even if they do sometimes show up a bit drunk or high.

“That’s a favorite part of the show,” he said of the show’s live audience. “They’re normal people that live normal lives. This is average America right here. There are no CEOs, ultra-rich upper management… These are middle class, working class. Every religion. It’s a cross-section of America.”
Per TV Insider’s reporting, Carey films three episodes a day, each with a new audience. But he regularly spends the commercial breaks walking through the audience to chat and joke with the crowd.
When asked how he deals with contestants who use a little “liquid courage” to compete on the show, Carey admitted that it “happens here all the time.”
“They’ll have a gummy or I’ll smell alcohol on their breath. Not unusual,” he said.
Carey even recalled one contestant competed on the show while “tripping on mushrooms.”
He recalled, “He came with a bunch of friends. He was a sketch [comedy] guy. I found out later when I went to [comedy theater group Upright Citizens Brigade] to hang out, and they were like, ‘Did you see that guy who claimed to be a skateboarding rabbi?’ I asked him what he did for a living. And he goes, ‘I’m a skateboarding rabbi.’ He didn’t think he was going to get picked, and he totally tripped.”
The Price is Right airs weekdays on CBS at 11/10c.
