Dubois sensationally stopped Joshua in the fifth round to defend his IBF world heavyweight title.

‘AJ’ was aiming to become a three-time world champion but failed in his pursuit, succumbing to Dubois’ power.

After the fight, he gave an extremely honest assessment of his performance as promoter Eddie Hearn accused Dubois of landing an ‘illegal blow’.

Despite losing to the 27-year-old and suffering the fourth defeat of his professional career, Joshua walked away from Wembley Stadium with a bigger purse.

According to Sporty Salaries, Joshua was guaranteed to earn £6 million.

But he could pocket as much as £25 million depending on pay-per-view (PPV) sales, with DAZN, Sky Sports and TNT Sports all carrying the world title bout.

Dubois, on the other hand, is expected to earn at least £3.5 million, potentially rising up to £10 million depending on the success of the PPV buys.

Joshua has a rematch clause against Dubois so a second meeting could be on the cards.

If he runs it back with the IBF king, then the former world champion will be hoping for a better start, having been dropped in the opening round.

On what went wrong, the 34-year-old said: “The first round? Overhand right, chin in the air, no defence kaboom.

“And it was a bit of a downhill slope from there. Tried to change the tides but it just weren’t my night tonight.”

Joshua added: “I caught him with a good shot I think and then I tried to go for it, and then I got caught with an overhead right, when I was throwing the uppercut.

“Thing is, I wasn’t setting shots up. In a shootout like that you really got to be a bit more sniper-esque.

“But when you’ve been hit a few times, it’s survival, I’m in survival mode.

“I just want to get him out of there and we had a shoot out and he hit me.”
