When did Elvis Presley join the army?

Elvis Presley joined the United States Army at Memphis, Tennessee, on March 24, 1958.

He then left active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 5, 1960, and received his discharge from the Army Reserve on March 23, 1964.

Where did Elvis serve in the army?

During his active military career Presley served as a member of two different armour battalions.

Between March 28 and September 17, 1958, he belonged to Company A, 2d Medium Tank Battalion, 37th Armour which was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.

During this time he completed basic and advanced military training.

Elvis then served overseas in Germany from October 1, 1958, until March 2, 1960.

It was here where he met the 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu.

The pair ended up tying the knot after a long courtship.

According to a 1985 interview with People magazine, Priscilla was introduced to Elvis by another officer.

However, it has been said that the teenager was very shy about meeting her icon.

After Elvis left the army in 1960 Priscilla joined him at Graceland.

During his early days in the army, Elvis’ mother Gladys, died after being diagnosed with hepatitis.

He was given emergency leave to visit her, arriving in Memphis on August 12, but she died on August 14, 1958, of heart failure at age 46.

Why did Elvis join the army?

It’s thought that Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker was instrumental in the musician joining the army.

It has been reported that the singer was offered various jobs in different branches of the military, including the Air Force and the Navy.

These roles would have seen him performing for troops and avoiding much of the training of other soldiers.

The Navy apparently suggested an Elvis Presley Company, which would include a battalion made up of Elvis’ friends.

They would have stayed in private lodgings where he could sleep while performing in Las Vegas.
