When did Elvis Presley begin his Las Vegas residency?
Elvis Presley’s first show at Las Vegas International Hotel was on July 31, 1969.
Following this success, he then signed a contract to take up a residency at the hotel.
During his time in Las Vegas, The King performed 636 sold-out performances to fans who travelled to the venue from all around the world.
The famous International Hotel has since been taken over and is now known as the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino.
How long was Elvis contracted to perform at Las Vegas?
On August 4, 1969, following the success of his Las Vegas show in July that year, Elvis signed a contract for a residency at the International Hotel.
This would see him tied to the venue for five years.
For this, Elvis was reportedly paid $125,000 per week of shows he did – this would translate to $1,045,059 or £874,703.93 in 2023.
The singer’s contract was later further extended for another two years.
When was Elvis Presley’s final Las Vegas concert?
Elvis held his Las Vegas residency for seven years, culminating with his final show at the resort on December 12, 1976.
However The King’s final ever performance before his death, was the following year.
Elvis performed on stage for the last time on June 26, 1977, at the Market Square arena in Indianapolis – which also marked his 55th show of that year.
It is reported that the only thing unusual about his performance was that he brought several family and friends on stage with him and introduced them to the audience.
This led some fans to later believe that he knew somehow it would be his final performance.
Elvis died on August 16, 1977 at his beloved Graceland mansion in Memphis.
He was found in the bathroom, face down in front of the toilet.
Doctors said he died of a heart attack, likely brought on by his addiction to prescription barbiturates.
