Deebo Samuel’s time with the San Francisco 49ers has officially come to an end. The dynamic wide receiver, who played a crucial role in some of the team’s most successful seasons in recent years, is heading to the Washington Commanders following a trade that shocked many. Injuries and the rise of new offensive stars made his role in San Francisco less prominent, leading the 49ers to move on from the former All-Pro.
After finalizing the trade on Saturday, Samuel addressed the move on Twitter, assuring there was no bitterness with his former team.

Samuel, once the heart of San Francisco’s offense, had his best season in 2021, racking up 1,770 total yards and 14 touchdowns, including more than 1,400 receiving yards. However, he struggled to replicate those numbers in the following years, with injuries and the arrivals of Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk pushing him into a smaller role. Given his sizable contract, the 49ers opted to trade him to Washington for a fifth-round pick, which frees up approximately $15 million in cap space for 2025.
Washington expects Deebo Samuel to step in as the WR2 alongside Terry McLaurin, giving rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels an exciting weapon. His versatility and playmaking ability after the catch could make him an important piece in the Commanders’ revamped offense.
While trades can sometimes create tension between players and teams, Deebo Samuel clarified that he and the 49ers organization have mutual respect.
“49ers know where I stand with them and it’s nothing but love. Love John and Kyle to death, no bad blood no way shape or form. They know I’m more than appreciative of everything they done for me as a player and a man. Nothing but love,” Samuel tweeted.
With the NFL offseason heating up, this could be just the beginning of major moves for both franchises. Deebo Samuel, meanwhile, is ready for his next challenge- one that could help define the next chapter of his career.
