Kansas City Chiefs News
The last two years have been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Statistically, he has recorded two of his three lowest passing yardage totals (3,228 in 2024, 4,183 in 2023), lowest QB rating (93.5 in 2023), and highest amount of interceptions (14 in 2023).
However, the Chiefs have a 26-13 record, two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win during that span. Much of that can be attributed to Kansas City’s defense, as the offense has battled through significant struggles much of the time.
There are several reasons as to why, such at the revolving door at left tackle, struggles within the wide receiver corps, and injuries to key players. If the Chiefs can straighten these issues out, we could see Mahomes return to his previously dominant self. ESPN analyst Kalyn Kahler believes that will happen as soon as next season, predicting that Mahomes will win the MVP award for the third time in his career.
“After losing to the Eagles, Mahomes said his two Super Bowl losses motivate him more than anything else,” Kahler wrote. “I’ve talked with his personal trainer, who saw firsthand how the first loss changed Mahomes, and based on that, I expect Mahomes to return with a new level of focus and determination behind an improved offensive line.”
The previous time Mahomes won MVP was in 2022, which was following the last postseason lost that the Chiefs have had since before Super Bow LIX. We saw Mahomes play with a chip on his shoulder like he had something to prove during that season, throwing for a career-high 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns.
Mahomes won his first MVP in 2018, recording 5,097 passing yards and a career-high 50 touchdowns. In order to get close to those numbers again, K.C. must find a good solution at LT and give Mahomes a little more firepower to work with at both WR and running back. The Chiefs may also need to re-evaluate their offensive coaching staff.
