ESPN made a prediction this week that bodes well for the New York Giants’ offseason.
On Wednesday, ESPN projected where several of this offseason’s top NFL free agents will sign.
ESPN has the Giants landing cornerback DJ Reed in free agency over the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers.
Reed, a former Kansas State standout, spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets. He’s also spent time in his pro career with the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks.
The Giants badly need to sign a cornerback in free agency. And while Reed isn’t a Pro Bowler, he’s a solid all-around player that has performed well throughout his career.
Marquand Manuel, who was named the Giants’ defensive backs coach earlier this offseason, was the Jets’ safeties coach for the last four seasons, so there’s an existing connection there with Reed.
From ESPN: The Giants need a No. 1 cornerback in the worst way, and Reed is the best option on the free agent market. He can cover and tackle, and he has already proved capable of handling the New York market. Reed might not be your prototypical shutdown corner, but the Giants will pay him as such to move across town. Last season, they gave up 7.7 yards per pass attempt (29th) and had only five interceptions (31st).
Pro Football Focus ranks Reed as the top available free agent cornerback and the No. 6 overall free agent this offseason.
From PFF: Reed is set to enter free agency after earning his sixth straight season-long 70.0-plus PFF overall grade. His 70.1 coverage grade in 2024 ranked 31st among qualifying cornerbacks. He excelled in PFF’s advanced metrics, boasting a 51.28% lockdown percentage.
Much of the focus for the Giants’ this offseason is on addressing the quarterback position. New York, however, also has to address the defensive side of the ball if they’re going to take a significant step forward in 2025.
