Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce continues to rewrite the record books.
With his third catch of Super Bowl LIX in the fourth quarter, Kelce has passed Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice for the most receptions in Super Bowl history with 34.
Kelce has cemented himself as one of the greatest postseason performers in NFL history, and he and Patrick Mahomes are arguably the greatest quarterback-pass catcher duo ever. Kelce is a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, and has a case for being considered as the best tight end of all-time.
Unfortunately, Kelce and the Chiefs were unable to complete the three-peat, falling to Philadelphia Eagles 40-22. Kelce finished the game with four catches on six targets for 39 yards. With the season now in the books, the 35-year-old veteran’s future is uncertain, but he does have one more year remaining on his contract and may not want to end his career on such a sour note.
However, Kelce has recently given fans a glimmer of hope that he’ll continue to play beyond next year. He has proven that he can still play at an elite level, even if he’s a bit less productive statistically over the course of an entire season at this stage of his career compared to when he was younger. Kelce’s value as a leader and a mentor for inexperienced players has become just as valuable as what he does on the field.
