The New York Giants agreed upon trade details and a new multi-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams for quarterback Matthew Stafford, but the deal fell apart once things became real. Instead of executing the proposed deal that would’ve sent the 37-year-old Stafford to the Big Apple with a hefty pay raise, the Rams and veteran quarterback opted for a short-term fix.

Stafford agreed to a revised one-year deal with the Rams amongst trade and contract discussions with the Giants and Las Vegas Raiders.

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager via The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Giants were prepared to swap Day 2 picks with the Rams and offer Stafford $15 million more per year than his slated salary of $23 million in 2025.

“I know it from all angles because of my relationship with McVay but also my relationship with Stafford,” Schrager said. “It was to go see what’s out there and what destinations would be possible. It came down to basically the (Las Vegas) Raiders being very interested and the Giants.”

“What I think the trade compensation would’ve been, the Giants give up their 2nd round pick, which is the 34th pick, and then the Rams give up a 3rd round and Stafford.

But then Stafford would need to tear up the contract and have a massive contract which would’ve been paying him close to $15 million more per year than what he’s essentially going to play for, for the Rams.”

Now, the Giants will likely look at signing a veteran like Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson instead. It’s possible they could consider Sam Darnold as well, since he’s younger and may come at a decent price after a late-season collapse with Minnesota.
