Rams sign multi-time All-Pro WR Davante Adams to two-year contract, all but ensuring Cooper Kupp getting dealt in near future

New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams (17) celebrates after getting on the scoreboard first with a first quarter touchdown, Sunday, December 22, 2024, in East Rutherford.

The Los Angeles Rams have signed free agent wide receiver Davante Adams to a two-year, $46 million contract with $26 million guaranteed.

Adams was released by the New York Jets last week as a salary cap casualty, saving the team $30 million. He figured to be the top WR available on the market, but since he was released teams have been able to sign him before the official start of the legal tampering period on Monday at 12 p.m. E.T.

Adams has been outspoken about wanting to play on the West Coast, as he played his college ball at Fresno State. He should be a great fit in coach Sean McVay’s offense, which badly needed a true X receiver that can beat man coverage. Adams will complement Puka Nacua and TuTu Atwell, who just received a new one-year, $10 million deal.

At 32-years-old, Adams is still highly productive. He caught 85 passes for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns with the Jets and Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, and has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in seven of his last eight seasons. Adams still has excellent burst off the line of scrimmage and can make tough, contested catches.

Following the signings of Adams and Atwell, the writing is on the wall for Cooper Kupp being traded, and it is in big and bold letters. The Rams have had Kupp on the trade block for a few weeks now, and talks could heat up now that Los Angeles has secured Adams.

While Adams is older than Kupp, he is more of the type of WR that the Rams need. When you also factor in Kupp’s injury issues over the past few years and his hefty contract, L.A. feels it is simply time to move on. Teams who are interested in Kupp may wait until some of the top free agent WRs are off the board, such as Stefon Diggs and Chris Godwin.
