Earlier this week, it was reported that the Dallas Cowboys rejected the Chicago Bears’ request to interview Mike McCarthy. While the 61-year-old and Jerry Jones presumably continue to discuss a new deal, McCarthy reportedly has interest in another team’s HC Vacancy.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys’ head coach “could have some interest” in the New Orleans Saints’ HC vacancy. Fowler adds that Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn appears to be the favorite for that opening, but he wouldn’t be surprised if New Orleans reaches out.

Additionally, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football appeared on a new episode of the “Off The Bench: Saints” YouTube show and reported that he thinks that the Saints will “try to interview” the Super Bowl 45-winning head coach.

McCarthy went 49-35-0 from 2020-2024 as the Cowboys’ head coach. Though he led them to three straight 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023, the Cowboys have only won a single playoff game under McCarthy — and that was against the 8-9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2022 Wild Card Round.

But McCarthy’s teams have consistently fielded top-tier offensive units. Between his stints as the Packers and Cowboys head coach, McCarthy’s teams have finished with the league’s No. 1 scoring offense four times and in the top-five 11 times.

Mike McCarthy Should Seek A New Challenge

McCarthy will always be limited with his decision-making as long as Jerry Jones remains the GM of the Cowboys. It’s not McCarthy’s fault that Jones failed to upgrade the roster in 2024, but it should also serve as a reminder that he’s better off seeking another team.

McCarthy makes sense for a team like the Bears who have a young QB in Caleb Williams and an ownership group that isn’t as power-hungry and hands-on like Jones.
