NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are continuing an all-out rebuild, agreeing to a trade on Wednesday afternoon that will send LB Kenneth Murray Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Titans and Cowboys will be swapping late-round draft picks in the trade and Murray, 26, lands in Dallas after one season in Tennessee.
The Titans signed Murray to a two-year, $15.5 million contract last offseason and made an investment in a position of weakness at inside linebacker. Murray’s ability to get downhill and pressure the quarterback was supposed to be a perfect fit in Dennard Wilson’s defense. Murray had an up-and-down season with the Titans, ultimately finishing with 95 tackles and 3.5 sacks with little help from his defensive teammates.
On the surface, Tennessee moving off of Murray, and essentially getting nothing in return doesn’t make sense. Inside linebacker is still a position of need for the Titans in 2025 and Murray is the best player on Tennessee’s roster at the position currently.
But this is what the Titans are going to do this offseason. This is a full-on rebuild. Decisions are not always going LT be made with 2025’s win-loss record in mind. Mike Borgonzi and the new front office are stepping in and doing a hard reset of this roster. It’s the same reason Jack Gibbens was not tendered a contract, and Ryan Stonehouse was let go. The Titans are trying to get some fresh faces in the building and restructure their entire foundation.
$15.5 million felt like a lot of money for Murray at the time. The Titans are now waving the white flag on that investment.
Tennessee’s linebackers under contract for 2025 are the newly acquired Cody Barton, Cedric Gray, James Williams, and Otis Reese IV. With all of the roster turnover and the proven veterans being forced out, it will be a big year for those younger guys to prove themselves.
