There’s an extra benefit for the Packers to sign Davante Adams after latest news, but early indications suggest it won’t be easy

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams (17) runs off the field after the NFC Divisional playoff football game against the San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field.

The dream idea of trading Jaire Alexander for Davante Adams won’t happen, but that doesn’t mean Adams can’t be a Packer again. On Tuesday, the New York Jets decided to release the wide receiver after being unable to deal him.

After the news of the release, there are positive and negative repercussions for the Green Bay Packers.

Extra benefit

Usually, the Packers tend to be cautious to add free agents. One of the reasons for it is the compensatory pick formula. Historically, Green Bay has had several comp picks because they lose many more free agents than they add.

Even last year, when they signed safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs, the Packers still had a positive formula and will receive a seventh-round pick for losing Yosh Nijman to the Carolina Panthers.

But that doesn’t matter in this case. As Adams was cut by the Jets, he’s technically a street free agent, and not an unrestricted free agent, so the team that signs him won’t have him counting against their compensatory pick formula.

The problem

However, trading for Adams would be the only way to make sure he would be a Packer. Now that he is available, any NFL team can sign him.

And it’s important to remember that Adams wanted out of Green Bay three years ago to live closer to his family on the West Coast. While Adams himself has shown some signs of regret, it’s fair to think he would prioritize West teams once again—and there are reports confirming that.

There’s also the possibility for Adams to follow Aaron Rodgers again, and the New York Giants would be a contender now that the Los Angeles Rams decided to keep Matthew Stafford.

So yes, the Packers might have interest in Adams, and the wide receiver could be open to a return. However, the competition will be real, and Davante has real reasons to choose other teams.
