What’s next for the Kansas City Chiefs after loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX

Kansas City Chiefs News

The Kansas City Chiefs are back in a familiar place. This Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles is very reminiscent of the Super Bowl they lost a few years ago to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They got their tails beat, in the same way. The defensive line of both teams that beat the Chiefs just dominated the offensive line, leaving Patrick Mahomes running for his life.

However, in this game, Mahomes deserves some of the blame. In the other Super Bowl loss, Mahomes was making otherworldly throws to players who would just drop the ball. This year, the two interceptions were on him, and a few of the sacks were, too. It was just an overall beatdown.

And, while a lot of fans are waking up on Monday pretty upset, and rightfully so, there is still a lot to be happy about. First of all, the fact that the Chiefs even made it back to the Super Bowl is impressive in itself. The last few teams who tried to three-peat never even made it back to the Super Bowl that next year.

The Chiefs did.

Now it’s about how they bounce back, or if they even can. I believe they can, and it starts now. If there is any team that will bounce back from this, it’s the Chiefs, as they pretty much already did. After they lost to the Buccaneers a few years ago, they missed the Super Bowl the next year, and then won two straight Super Bowls.

So, to get back to this position next season, what happens next?

What’s next for Chiefs

The Chiefs have a very busy offseason on their plates. General manager Brett Veach will not have a tough time finding something to do. It starts with finding out what the Chiefs’ needs are heading into next year, and whether they want to draft for that need or approach it in free agency.

The biggest need is obviously on the offensive line. They need to figure out what they’re going to do at the left tackle spot. I’m not sure you can go into next year being okay with Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris as your two left tackles. They will have to either draft another one or address it in free agency. What they will do is still a big question.

And that’s not the only thing they have to address on the offensive line. Trey Smith is set to be a free agent, and he will likely be the highest-paid guard in the league. Now, he could take a massive pay cut to stay with Kansas City, but how often does that really happen?

If he does indeed leave, I could see them addressing the position via the draft.

Then there are the cornerback positions, wide receiver, and defensive line. All of those positions need to be better. And, it will be impossible for them to get a game-changer at every single position in the draft. But, they can certainly try.

And of course, the Chiefs also need to see where some of their players stand in terms of their careers. Will Travis Kelce return? Will Andy Reid retire or let the team know that he plans to after next year, etc?

The Chiefs have to nail this offseason if they want a chance at getting back to the Super Bowl. And, they can do just that.
