Lainey Wilson shared another preview of her upcoming album, Whirlwind, with the song “Good Horses” featuring Miranda Lambert. Available Friday, August 2, the new tune marks Wilson’s first-ever collaboration on her own project.
The “Hang Tight Honey” singer has dubbed this to be a “really special” song for its powerful message that hones in on one’s desire to let their wild side run free while simultaneously assuring their loved ones that that no matter where they end up in the world or how far they go, they will always find their way back home.
Wilson has passion and determination running through her vocals as the haunting melody bellows underneath in the opening verse.
“If there’s a green pasture I wanna be in it/ I’m a wild wildflower just a ready for the picking/ Ooooooo/ 31 years is a long time coming/ Feet off the ground but I’mma still running/ Ooooooo,” she sings.
Upon reaching the chorus, Lambert brings her Texas-grown sound in full force, creating a stunning blend of harmonies between her and the Louisiana native. This duet further encourages listeners to follow their own paths while never losing sight of the most important things in life.
“I don’t need a map/ I don’t need a road/ I don’t need a fence/ I just need to roam/ If you wanna love me/ You don’t need a rope/ You just need to know/ Good horses come home,” the country stars deliver on the chorus.
The Writing Session Behind “Good Horses”
“Good Horses” was produced by GRAMMY ® award-winning producer, Jay Joyce and penned during a serene writing session between Wilson, Lambert and Luke Dick that took place in a small cabin on Lambert’s 400-acre horse farm in Tennessee. This also happened to be where Lambert’s no. 1 hit, “Bluebird” was penned.
“I am so excited for everyone to finally be able to have their hands on this song. Writing with Miranda and Luke feels like home, and I will forever cherish the day we wrote this song,” said Wilson. “‘Good Horses’ is all about finding your way back home, no matter where you are.”
Lambert adds, “’Good Horses’ is about all the people that love the comfort of home, but also need to be free. Lainey and I wrote this song at my farm with Luke Dick. Lainey is a genuine and authentic human. I love watching her dreams come true right in front of our eyes, and it’s so cool to be a little part of it.”
The pair of female artists have already previewed this heartfelt track on several occasions where they surprised fans by taking the stage together and showcased the humbleness of the tune’s story through their distinctive vocals. The first joint performance was on December 15, 2023, when Lambert appeared on stage during Wilson’s third sold-out concert in Sin City, as part of her four-show run presented by Wrangler. Together, they brought the house down with a powerful performance that reminded listeners of their hard-working spirits. They later shared the stage again during Wilson’s run of two sold-out shows at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater in June.
This serves as the fourth song to be released in advance of Lainey Wilson’s forthcoming and highly anticipated record, Whirlwind, arriving August 23 via BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville. The other early previews include “Country’s Cool Again,” “4x4xU” and the project’s lead single “Hang Tight Honey” which is currently in the Top 15 at Country radio and climbing.

In addition to preparing for her next album release, Lainey Wilson is also gearing up to return to the road for her headlining Country’s Cool Again Tour featuring special guests Jackson Dean, Zach Top and Ian Munsick on select dates. She starts this run back up again on August 8 in Huntsville, AL.
