Kelly Clarkson blew everyone away with a shock medley at the Billboard Music Awards, covering a wild array of artists like Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Bruno Mars! She opened the show with the country pop tune “My Church,” then stunned everybody by transitioning to Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” which she laid down with a whole lotta attitude. This instantly won the crowd over, and then she seamlessly transitioned into Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder” and Khalid’s “Young, Dumb and Broke.”
Clarkson wasn’t done as next she showed off her ability to flow like Bruno Mars on “Finesse (Remix)” and then croon like Ed Sheeran on “Shape of You.” She had a lot more up her sleeve, but we’ll leave it to The Musical Devotees readers to find out what Clarkson’s choice for the big finale was. We all know Clarkson crushes pop rock hits, but it was a real revelation to see her go full into rap and R&B vocals. It turns out that she can do anything, and we’re loving it!
The medley was really magic to watch because it gave us a chance to see all the original artists react live to Clarkson’s take on their songs. She dropped the medley at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, and it went viral and blew up to 24 million views across multiple uploads. Fans were loving it, and added comments such as “Literally she can sing anything!” and “There is no one else in the world who could have pulled that off. Burleson, Texas’s own Kelly Clarkson, ladies and gentlemen.”
Clarkson is a real veteran at hosting the Billboard Music Awards, as she hosted the event three years running from 2018 to 2020. And I’m sure The Musical Devotees readers can guess what that means – lots of fun with medleys. Clarkson’s 2019 medley was also a big hit, and this time around she featured tracks from Dua Lipa, Madonna, Maroon 5, Mariah Carey, and Post Malone.
It’s no surprise that the Billboard Music Awards kept on asking Clarkson to return year after year, as who else could pull off a medley like that! Clarkson’s run of hosting the Billboard Music Awards three times in a row put her in the record books, as she’s only the third person to do so. Kathy Griffin hosted the awards three times in a row starting in 1998, while Ludacris hosted the event four times in a row starting in 2014.
