Springsteen — who performed his own set as part of the games closing ceremonies — joined Adams and his band for a performance of the 1983 hit, “Cuts Like a Knife.” It was the first time the two rockers appeared on stage together. The show, which took place at the Air Canada Centre, also featured Kelly Clarkson, Bachman and Turner and Coeur de Pirate.
Springsteen’s own set — possibly a preview of his upcoming run of solo concerts on Broadway, which begins Tuesday — included acoustic versions of “Working on the Highway” and “Dancing in the Dark” from his 1984 album, “Born in the USA,” and “The Promised Land” from his fourth LP, 1978’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” While his solo set was just himself, a guitar and a harmonica, the 68-year old rocker plugged in to join Adams and his band to perform “Badlands” from that same album, as well as the duet. Springsteen had covered “Cuts Like a Knife” once before at a Rainforest benefit at Carnegie Hall in 2010.
The Invictus Games is a week-long series of Paralympic-style games for wounded military veterans. The first games took place in London in 2014, then moved to Orlando in 2016.
Springsteen begins previews of his “Springsteen on Broadway” Tuesday at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City. The shows will continue through Feb. 3.
