Wendy Williams Under Fire for “Disgusting” Jokes About Drew Carey’s Ex-Fiancee’s Death
Wendy Williams has found herself in hot water for the second time this week. On Monday, The Wendy Williams Show host made a series of terrible jokes about the death of Drew Carey’s ex-fiancée, Dr. Amie Harwick, who was allegedly pushed off a balcony by an ex-boyfriend on Saturday. Williams’ cringe-worthy jokes were met with silence from the audience, but viewers at home were anything but: angry commenters quickly slammed the host’s remarks as “disgusting” and “horrible.” Added one viewer, “When is she finally going to be canceled?”
While many daytime shows were off for Presidents’ Day, it was business as usual for The Wendy Williams Show. About 10 minutes into Monday’s Hot Topics segment, Williams turned to Harwick’s passing. According to Page Six, police report that Harwick, a well-known sex therapist, was killed by her ex-boyfriend after a “struggle” at her Los Angeles home early Saturday morning. When police arrived, her body was found on the ground below a third-story balcony. Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, has been taken into custody and charged with her murder.
“Drew Carey’s ex-fiancée was tragically murdered over the weekend,” said Williams (Harwick and Carey were engaged for about a year and broke up in 2018). The daytime host described Harwick’s death in detail, but she appeared to make light of the situation. “She was killed. Not by Drew … ‘Come on down!’” she said, mimicking The Price Is Right host’s trademark line. Williams then looked up and down, as if she were watching someone fall to the ground.
The terrible sequence of jokes were met with groans and silence from the audience, and Williams seemed unsure how to proceed. After an awkward pause, she asked producers why they “threw ‘allegedly’ in there” to describe Harwick’s ex-boyfriend. “The ex-boyfriend hasn’t been convicted,” said a producer. “He’s been arrested. He’s in jail as we speak,” replied Williams. “Alright, ‘allegedly.’”
Williams’ tangent helped to reset the studio audience, but viewers at home weren’t as kind. “Wendy Williams clearly making fun of the death of Drew Carey’s ex Amie Harwick,” tweeted one angry viewer. “Somebody tell me I heard that wrong, please,” added another. “You’re a horrible person Wendy. Very poor taste,” said another.
I KNOW #WendyWilliams did NOT just make a “come on down” joke about Drew Carey’s ex-fiancee getting killed by being thrown off of a third floor balcony !!!!
