The primary focus of New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen over the next 50 days will be to find both a veteran quarterback and his impending successor, who they hope will become the new face of the franchise.
Schoen has promised to leave no stone unturned in that pursuit and has even been offered assistance from retired Giants legend Eli Manning.
“I like watching film,” Manning said, via the New York Post. “If that’s something I’m wanted for, needed for, be happy to look at film and get involved in that part of it.”
It’s unclear if Schoen ever took Manning up on that offer, but at least one former staffer who was involved in the search to replace the two-time Super Bowl champion hopes the GM hasn’t.
“Eli should have no bearing whatsoever on their next quarterback decision,” the anonymous ex-staffer told the New York Post. “If they are trying to do that, they’ve already messed it up. You have to evolve, not hold onto the past.”
One of the reasons the Giants settled on Daniel Jones was his similarities to Manning. That obviously did not work out for the organization, which is ironically partially the fault of this staffer.
But the sentiment is fair. It’s not that Manning shouldn’t be involved, it’s that the Giants shouldn’t be looking for a Manning clone. They’d love to have that same level of success with their next franchise quarterback, but the game has evolved and if they wish to compete, they must evolve with it.
