Top of the MOPS! Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse and Bob Marley have the most iconic hairdos in pop history… while Jedward is voted the worst

Elvis Presley’s signature black quiff is the most iconic hairdo in pop history, according to a recent poll.

The King – whose natural hair colour was actually sandy blonde – beat a string of music legends, including Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley, David Bowie and Lady Gaga, to claim the ‘top of the mops’ title.

Meanwhile Jedward were named and shamed for having the worst haircut of all time with their sky-scraping blonde dos.

The survey, of 1,500 music fans, celebrated the best and worst hairstyles to grace the pop world – with Elvis a clear winner.

The rock ‘n’ roll idol was styled by Larry Geller, who quit his salon in Hollywood to become his full-time barber – Geller even styled Elvis’ hair for his funeral in 1977.

In an interview Geller once revealed the secret to Elvis’ glossy locks – a mixture of base shampoo, vitamin capsules, aloe vera and herbs were all used to style the singer’s world famous hair.

Tragic soul singer Amy Winehouse, who died in 2011 at the age of 27, came second in the poll for her dramatic beehive.

The Prodigy’s Keith Flint, the late Michael Jackson and Blondie’s Debbie Harry also made the top ten, as did Tina Turner and Cher.

The 1980s – widely regarded as the decade of fashion disasters – were hailed as the best for pop hairdos.

But the stars with memorable locks for all the wrong reasons were also ‘honoured’ in the ten worst dos of all time.

Among the hall of shame was X Factor twins Jedward and ‘Nothing Compares to You’ singer Sinéad O’Connor, who was one of the first female stars to shave off all her hair.

Time After Time singer Cyndi Lauper’s red and orange mop, Ed Sheeran’s frizzy style and Michael Bolton’s 1970s-style footballer’s curls also got a firm thumbs down.

The erratic styles of the Bee Gees, Miley Cyrus and Meatloaf also proved unpopular.

The study also acknowledged other influential styles, including Liam Gallagher’s ‘Manc mop’, Dolly Parton’s tumbling curls and Eminem’s bleached blond crew cut.

One in ten women have tried to copy Amy Winehouse’s beehive, while around one in ten men have experimented with Elvis’s quiff or Liam Gallagher’s ‘Manc mop’, according to the findings.

It also emerged that more than one in five music fans have changed their hairstyle after their pop idol paraded a new look.

However surprisingly more males than females admitted copying a celebrity’s look, with 43 per cent of men compared to just 33 per cent of women.
