DC fans rejoice as deep-cut Batman villain surfaces in live-action project

DC just dropped an obscure Batman villain into its new TV series, and as you can imagine, fans are loving it.

Batman, and DC in general, have a never-ending listing of rogues to feature in its stories, though nowadays you always see the same villains crawling out of the woodwork.

Check out the trailer for the new Batman TV series, The Penguin, below.

While I love Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman and all the other Batman villains, an obscure one just popped up in The Penguin series, one I don’t think anyone was expecting to see anytime soon.

It’s none other than Magpie, a character harkening back to the Golden Age of DC comic storylines.

Magpie originally started out as a Superman villain, though not an important one by any means. As her name implies, Magpie loves shiny gemstones, bonus points if it’s named after a bird.

As Superman’s villain of the week, she was thwarted from stealing and eventually became a Batman villain, though then she levelled-up to replacing the gems she stole with explosive replicas instead.

Magpie has been referenced a few times throughout DC storylines, and she’s made a couple of live-action appearances in Gotham and the CW show Batwoman.

Her most recent appearance however has been Episode Four of The Penguin, appearing in the cell next door to Sofia in Arkham Asylum.

The character introduces herself by saying, “My name is Magpie like the bird,” before meeting her unfortunate end at the hands of Sofia later in the episode, poor Magpie.

While they’ll never be a serious foil to Batman, it’s always nice when a new Batman project features one of these D-List villains for the eagle-eyed comic fans.
