Officials in Argentina have said “everything indicates” the singer was alone at the time of his death and that he could have fallen while either being semi-conscious or unconscious;
An autopsy report showed Payne’s 25 injuries were compatible with those caused by falling from a height, and his head injuries were sufficient to cause death;
It added that no injuries were observed that would suggest the involvement of a third party;
Officials also confirmed a search of Payne’s hotel room uncovered “what appeared to be narcotics, alcohol, destroyed objects and furniture”. Police said they had found over-the-counter medications, energy packs and anxiety drug Clonazepam in the room;
City police said that in the atrium of the hotel where Payne had fallen they had found a bottle of whiskey, a lighter, and a mobile phone;
Police said five statements were taken last night from three hotel workers and two women who, in the hours prior, had been with Payne in his room, but had already left the hotel when the incident occurred;

The singer was in Buenos Aires to attend the concert of former bandmate Niall Horan, with videos showing Payne dancing at the show two weeks ago;
His family released their first statement since his death, saying they were “heartbroken” and that he would “forever live in our hearts”.
