With 58 Super Bowls in the books, there are plenty of trends to take away from the history of the big game.

There’s one in particular that favors the Kansas City Chiefs. As they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on February 9th, it will mark the second time head coaches Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni will face off in the championship matchup.

That has occurred four times previously with the following coaches. . .

Andy Reid vs. Kyle Shanahan (Super Bowl LIV, LVIII)
Tom Coughlin vs. Bill Belichick (Super Bowl XLII, XLVI)
Jimmy Johnson vs. Marv Levy (Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII)
Chuck Noll vs. Tom Landry (Super Bowl X, XII)

In each instance, the same coach emerged victorious both times – which were Reid, Coughlin, Johnson, and Noll.

That’s obviously a positive sign for the Chiefs’ chances to beat the Eagles, especially since Reid has proven he can beat the same coach twice in a Super Bowl. Kansas City defeated Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in 2019, then again in 2023 by a final score of 25-22.

In between those games, the Chiefs beat Philadelphia 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. It was a thrilling back-and-forth game with plenty of big offensive plays. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes turned in a gutsy performance on a bum ankle, completing 77 percent of his passes and tossing three touchdowns. He also rushed for 44 yards, including a crucial 26-yard scamper on third-and-one during K.C.’s final drive of the game.

We should be in for another classic matchup again this time around. They have actually played each other since Super Bowl 57, when the Eagles beat the Chiefs 21-17 in Week 11 of the 2023 season. Both teams are returning many familiar players, but also have some important new pieces. With a win, K.C. will become the first franchise in NFL history to win three consecutive championships.
