Selena Gomez has received an honor few Americans do for her work in Emilia Pérez: a medal recognizing her significant contribution to the arts in France. Last night, the actress and her co-stars were awarded the coveted Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres at Villa Albertine in New York City. Mohamed Bouabdallah, the cultural counselor of France in the U.S., bestowed the cast with the medals.
Gomez share footage of the ceremony on Instagram. For background, the group filmed Emilia Pérez in Paris, which was written and directed by Jacques Audiard. This isn’t the first major French honor the cast has gotten either: Gomez and the film’s female stars, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Adriana Paz, also won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
For the high-profile occasion, Gomez opted for a blazer minidress—one that fits right in with the rest of her all-black press tour looks. She added matching heels and sheer tights to complete her latest outfit.
Earlier this week, Gomez spoke to Extra at the film’s New York City premiere about Emilia Pérez Oscar buzz. “I don’t know. We’ll see about that?” she said, before touching on the film more broadly. “I truly feel honored that it’s even being acclaimed the way that it is. It’s such a beautiful story, so if anything, this is my proudest moment for sure.”
Gomez spoke Spanish in the project, something that carried extra weight for the Latina actress. “It meant the world to me that he [Audiard] trusted me with that, and it meant a lot to my family,” she said.
She added that she worked hard on her language skills and even had help from her family. “I had coaches, yes, and we communicated every day in Spanish, but, yeah, my dad was even so proud,” she shared. “He was like, ‘You’re texting me, mija,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m texting you in Spanish.’”
