‘Jeopardy!’ Mark Fitzpatrick’s Cockiness Caused Big Loss?
Mark Fitzpatrick recently impressed fans of Jeopardy! with his five-day winning streak. However, after his streak came to an end, Fitzpatrick shared his feelings on what happened. That said, fans might not have seen the last of Fitzpatrick on the show.
Fitzpatrick Didn’t Have Much Lucky With The Initial Daily Doubles
After winning the five previous games, Fitzpatrick play against clinical psychologist Dot White and Vermont lawyer Eamonn Campbell. Early on, things weren’t going so well for Fitzpatrick.
While he found the first Daily Double, Fitzpatrick missed it, bringing his score down by $1,000. Despite usually maintaining a lead in his earlier games, he was tied with White for second, putting Campbell in the lead.

Fitzpatrick didn’t have much luck with the second Daily Double, either. Wagering all of his money, which totaled $5,800, he once again missed it, bringing his score don to $0.
However, Fitzpatrick’s luck turned around with the third Daily Double, putting him at second behind Campbell. By the time of Final Jeopardy!, however, he was in third place.
The Final Jeopardy! would decide the winner. With World Political History as the category, the clue read, “William Whitelaw & John Peyton were also-rans in a 1975 leadership vote with this victor.”
Only Campbell guessed the correct response: “Who was Margaret Thatcher?” This won him the game with a score of $13,700. White came in at second while Fitzpatrick was in third.
As noted by The U.S. Sun, shortly after the game, Fitzpatrick went online to talk about what happened. As he wrote on Reddit, “It took 6 games but I finally reverted to my true trivia identity: an overconfident, overthinking, hot mess.” That said, he still showed support for White and Campbell, writing, “Congrats to Eamonn on the win and also to Dot for a strong second.”
Some Fans Thought Fitzpatrick Was Being Too Hard On Himself
One user came to Fitzpatrick’s defense, claiming that one questions he recieved was too difficult. As they wrote, “The ‘Waiting to Exhale’ 1200 question for ‘Women Authors’ was super hard. Do people agree that should have been a 2000 question? Sometimes I turn my sideways on these point allocations for different questions.”
Fitzpatrick himself, however, responded to the comment, feeling the game was fair. As he wrote, “I thought it’s very fair clue value, just couldn’t come up with it. If the question had been, ‘This author of Waiting to Exhale…’ i would have easily got McMillan. But in the moment you can forget the other direction!”
When another user worried Fitzpatrick was being “mean” to himself with his comments, the contestant also assured otherwise. As he wrote, “[Don’t] worry I know I’m good at J! This is how an authentically Irish classic American heals.”
That said, this might not be the last time fans get to see Fitzpatrick compete on the show. With his five consecutive wins he qualifies for the Tournament of Champions. He is also notably the first contestant from season 41 to do so.
