Pat Sajak says he ‘finally snapped’ after jokingly blasting an ‘ungrateful’ contestant on Wheel of Fortune

Pat Sajak said he ‘finally snapped’ on Wednesday night’s Wheel of Fortune after he jokingly blasted one of his contestants as ‘ungrateful’.

The game show host hit out at Darin McBain when the contestant correctly answered a puzzle but then questioned the accuracy of the answer.

The sudden outburst startled some viewers with several taking to social media to pick their side in the debate.

Sajak apologized later on in the show before adding that McBain’s mom, who had a stint on the show in the 80s, didn’t give ‘us trouble like you did’.

The jokey spat kicked off when McBain was given a puzzle to think of words that begin with the word ‘kitchen’.

The contestant gave the correct answers of cabinet, oven, towels and sink.

But he then questioned whether one of his answers should really be correct.

‘Kitchen oven? What was that?’ McBain asked.

‘Yeah, where else would you keep an oven?’ Sajak fired back.

McBain replied: ‘For sure in the kitchen, but who calls it a ‘kitchen oven?”

At this point, Sajak appeared to lose his cool, yelling: ‘You won! Don’t argue, Darin! You got the puzzle! Ungrateful players, I’ve had it!’

Sajak laughed before adding: ‘No, I’m just teasing. I finally snapped!’

Later in the show, Sajak apologized to the contestant for his behavior.

‘I’m sorry I yelled at you,’ he said.

‘It’s just – I don’t remember your mother giving us trouble like you did,’ he added, in reference to McBain’s mom who was a three-day champion on the show in 1982.

Viewers at home joined in the fun on social media, with some debating McBain’s argument about the ‘kitchen oven’ while others poked fun at Sajak’s outburst.

‘Cooking in my ‘kitchen oven’. But I’m seriously considering a living room oven. Thanks for the idea, @patsajak! Happy Thanksgiving to all!!’ one person tweeted.

Others agreed with McBain’s uncertainty over the puzzle: ‘I agree…who calls it a Kitchen Oven. #WheelOfFortune.’

‘The contestant was right! I said The exact same thing before he did! And Pat was just having fun. No harm, no foul,’ added another.

Others laughed at Sajak’s humorous defense of the puzzle: ‘I loved it, Pat is a great host with a sense of humor. No guile in him!’

‘“Ungrateful contestants!” Pat’s not having it tonight. #WheelOfFortune,’ laughed another.

Another shared the footage on social media writing: ‘Oh my @patsajak almost lost it on this dude.’

Sajak has hosted Wheel of Fortune since it began in 1982. It is now in its 38th season.
