Kelly Clarkson lit up more than just the Rockefeller Christmas tree at the 2023 lighting ceremony—she lit up hearts around the world. Stepping onto the stage, wrapped in the glow of the season, she delivered a show-stopping performance of “Underneath the Tree.”

Kelly Clarkson Wears Alaïa Coat at Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting

Kelly Clarkson performed during Christmas in Rockefeller Center for the first time more than 20 years ago. She returned to perform several times over the years. Then, last year, she made her hosting debut. Tonight (December 4), she’ll return to host for the second year in a row. However, much like last year, Clarkson won’t just host the event, she’ll also perform.

Clarkson has a wealth of great holiday songs in her repertoire. As a result, she’s an easy pick to perform during events such as Christmas in Rockefeller Center.

Watch her take the stage to perform her fan-favorite Yuletide banger “Underneath the Tree” at last year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting below.

Clarkson co-wrote “Underneath the Tree” with producer Greg Kurstin for her 2013 Christmas album Wrapped in Red. The upbeat tune captures the spirit of togetherness that many feel during the holiday season. In the song, she sings about her loved one being the only gift she needs underneath the Christmas tree.

While Clarkson will host the event, TODAY anchors will also appear during the broadcast. Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Craig Melvin will be there. This will also likely be Kotb’s last time presenting after announcing her departure from the morning show earlier this year.

This year’s tee hails from Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The 11-ton Norway spruce is 74 feet tall and 43 feet wide. It will house more than 50,000 multi-colored lights. After it comes down in mid-January the tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. It will then be milled into lumber to use in home construction projects.

Christmas in Rockefeller Center will air on NBC tonight starting at 8/7c. Those who don’t have cable will be able to watch the star-studded holiday spectacular on Peacock.
