Keith Urban paired up once again with his old friend John Mayer on ‘The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles’ on Sunday night (Feb. 9).
The pair turned in a rocking performance of ‘Don’t Let Me Down,’ highlighted by a climactic trade-off guitar solo at the end end of the song that was one of the evening’s show-stopping highlights.
The performance was taped live on Monday, Jan. 27, and ran on Sunday evening to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ debut appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ which was one of the most important events in 20th century pop culture in the US.
The pair have previously teamed up on multiple occasions, including an episode of CMT’s ‘Crossroads,’ as well as a joint performance at Eric Clapton’s 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival, where they also played ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’
That’s where the show’s organizers got the idea to pair them up for the once-in-a-lifetime Grammy tribute event.
“I had seen them do ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ at the Eric Clapton Crossroads show last fall at the Garden in New York,” producer Ken Ehrlich tells ABC News Radio, “and it was really amazing, with some blazing guitar solos. So I thought that would be great.”
Brad Paisley also teamed up with Pharrell Williams to perform on the show, which also featured John Legend, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Dave Grohl and Stevie Wonder.
