Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson singing together “Shallow” is the mashup we didn’t know we needed. The Gaga and Bradley Cooper megahit already had plenty of vocal firepower, but the song really hit the next level when Gaga and Clarkson’s voices are heard together on the ballad.
YouTuber Blighght took live performances of the song from the two stars and did a brilliant mashup that really seems like the real deal. Until reading the description, I didn’t realise it was an edit, as their vocals work together so naturally on the song. This version of “Shallow” has hit 4.6 million views on YouTube, as you can see below.
The performance opens with Clarkson singing the first verse in a lowkey and intimate style. Gaga keeps the vibe chill as she sings the following verse and accompanies herself on piano. The song picks up as the stars take turns singing the belting in the pre-chorus, then their voices intertwine in the chorus, creating a really beautiful moment.
Having two such huge vocal talents singing together on the song is a real treat, and the arrangement done by Blighght flows so seamlessly. Clearly, Gaga and Clarkson need to pick up the phone and perform the song together for real, because the chemistry of their voices together is off the chart. Check out the full version of Clarkson’s live cover of “Shallow” below, which she performed during her concert in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Clarkson clearly has a knack for picking covers that suit her style, as she absolutely knocked her version of “Shallow” out of the park. The singer told the crowd at the show that she loved the Gaga tune, saying “I thought she and Bradley Cooper did an awesome job. We’re gonna do our version of it ’cause obviously, I don’t have a Bradley Cooper here. So I’m just holding it down.”
Clarkson added that “We’re really different but we’re really similar in the fact that she loves music and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.” The pop star also revealed that the pair had worked together some years ago, saying “Honestly, I remember her first single, we actually did a show together combined for some event and she is one of the only artists that has ever [sent] me a hand-written letter saying, ‘Thank you so much, it was an honour to open for you.’ She’s the nicest lady ever.”
Although the country-pop vibes of “Shallow” are a far cry from Gaga’s many dance pop hits, the ballad became one of her most enduring songs. It is currently her most played song on Spotify, with 2.2 billion streams clocked, which is more than double her second most popular song on the platform, “Poker Face”.
Gaga co-wrote the song with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando. The original studio recording features actor Bradley Cooper as her duet partner, and the song was the lead single from the soundtrack to the pair’s 2018 blockbuster musical drama A Star is Born.
