Lindsay Lohan’s Malibu Mansion From Panned Movie ‘The Canyons’ Goes Up for Sale for a Whopping $7.25 Million

t is rare that the reputation of a famous home exceeds the reputation of the movie that was shot there. But such is the case with this beautiful Malibu Canyon compound, which served as one of the filming location for Lindsay Lohan‘s universally panned film, “The Canyons.”

Lohan’s 2013 movie project was slammed by viewers—receiving just a 15% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes—but the owners of the home featured in it are likely hoping to find more love for their property.

The iconic modernist home, listed at $7,250,000, was designed by renowned local Malibu designer Vitus Mataré, who was inspired by the work of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, with stylish, minimalist finishes.

“It’s extremely rare to find this level of privacy and acreage with ocean views that is still close to Pacific Coast Highway,” says listing agent Tony Mark, of The Mark & Grether Group, Compass. “The property functions as a compound, offering countless spaces perfect for both unwinding and entertaining. The pool alone has to be one of Malibu’s best.”

The film, on the other hand, shot on the premises in 2012, does not get such rave reviews. A lusty take on the dark side of the film industry and life in Los Angeles, Lohan and the house itself are the standout stars.

Directed by Paul Schrader, it saw Lohan playing the part of Tara, a model who lived in the home with her boyfriend, played by James Deen. Tara enjoys a lavish and privileged lifestyle behind the walls of her mansion, before her world is turned upside down by illicit love triangles and a sinister murder plot.

Struggling to keep up? So did the audiences.

But what about this 4,975-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath spread makes it a real star—away from the movie set?

Well, the location for one thing. The sprawling home is set on a promontory on a private 12.43-acre lot overlooking Carbon Mesa, the Pacific Ocean, Catalina, and the Channel Islands.

“The setting of this home is incredibly unique, situated on its own promontory,” says co-listing agent Russell Grether, also of The Mark & Grether Group, Compass. “The private road access makes all of Malibu easily accessible while having true panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding untouched mountains.”

As a bonus, the sale price includes the adjoining lot, which comprises a large portion of the total acreage. It’s a level pad that could be developed with an ancillary structure, a second pool, a pickleball court, raised gardens—or for multiple other purposes.

And you can practically smell the grapes growing in a private vineyard.

Four structures—including the main house with a garage, a pool house, a detached carport, and a separate studio workspace—make up the property. All are thoughtfully designed.

The primary residence was designed with a balance of wide-open spaces for entertaining and more intimate zones for privacy and tranquility, all with extensive views.

Highlights include a  multilevel atrium with vaulted, wood ceilings; a sleek, modern kitchen with a dining/prep island that seats at least eight; numerous floor-to-ceiling accordion doors that disappear when open; a grand primary suite with luxe wood floors and ceiling; and a huge, partially covered patio/deck with sounding views.

Native landscaping lines the path from that deck, which leads to a pool and pool house featuring a separate entrance, full kitchen, and laundry. The space is currently a very highly rated Airbnb short-term rental.
The kitchen is sleek and stylish.

Gorgeous wood tones adorn this primary bedroom.
Another bedroom features a circular staircase and loft.
The home offers indoor-outdoor living at its finest.
Among the property’s natural amenities are its organic avocado, citrus, guava, and apricot trees.

In addition, there’s plenty of room for guest parking—there’s a two-car garage with a workshop area; a three-car carport; a long, lushly landscaped driveway; and a motor court with parking for seven vehicles.

Not only was the property featured in “The Canyons,” but it has also gained notoriety on the cover of Vogue magazine as the site of a haute fashion shoot.

With location fees and that short-term rental guesthouse, the home is also earning its own salary—yet another indication that it’s a star in its own right.
