Paul McCartney is praising Beyonce for her cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” on her new album “Act II: Cowboy Carter.”
“I am so happy with Beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird.’ I think she does a magnificent version of it, and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place,” McCartney wrote in a Facebook post Thursday.
McCartney revealed that he spoke to Beyonce via FaceTime, and she thanked him for writing “Blackbird” and allowing her to cover it.
McCartney said he told Beyonce that “the pleasure was all mine” and he thought she did a “killer” version of the song.
“When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the Black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now,” McCartney wrote. “Anything my song and Beyonce’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”
Beyonce’s country album “Act II: Cowboy Carter” was released March 29 and includes several other covers, including songs like Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” and Chuck Berry’s “Oh Louisiana.”
Parton herself welcomed Beyonce into the country music genre with open arms. In an Instagram post, Parton congratulated Beyonce on her single “Texas Hold ‘Em” hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
“Texas Hold ‘Em” has remained No. 1 on the chart for seven consecutive weeks.
“Act II: Cowboy Carter” is the second of what is anticipated to be a three-part project, following her massively successful album “Act I: Renaissance.”
“Act II: Cowboy Carter” is Beyonce’s eighth studio album.
