Musician Taylor Swift has managed to straddle the world of music and sports perfectly in the past few months with her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce going viral.
The hitmaker, who is worth a staggering $1 billion as per Forbes, recently posted a YouTube Shorts clip of herself depicting 14 moments from her day-to-day life such as cooking with her boyfriend and sewing while wearing a Kansas Jayhawks-themed sweatshirt.
The sweatshirt had ‘K. U’ in huge yellow letters and the ‘Beak Em’ logo. Taylor Swift visited the Kansas campus back in 2009 when she went to visit her friend Abigail Anderson, a swimmer for the Jayhawks, and even attended a class with her.
During a later interview with Oprah Winfrey, the popular Miss Swift was asked what her perfect day would look like and it involved a visit to K. U.
“Kansas. I love Kansas,” Swift said. “My perfect day off would be going to visit my best friend Abigail in Lawrence, Kansas.”
The Taylor Swift effect that Kansas hopes to tap into
Taylor Swift is the biggest deal in the music industry currently and the sheer engagement that she has brought to the NFL by attending Travis Kelce’s Chiefs games at Arrowhead Stadium has been a testament to her star power.
13% of Americans interviewed in a survey by Lending Tree stated that they were more invested in the NFL due to the musician.
According to the President of Apex Marketing Group, Eric Smallwood, Swift increased the brand value of the Kansas City Chiefs by up to $331.5 million since she started visiting Arrowhead Stadium for her boyfriend’s games.
“If you took a population base of the seven billion people in the world, many could name an athlete from global sports such as Formula 1 or English Premier League,” Eric Smallwood said. “And that’s what this whole viral episode is all about; it has really catapulted Travis and made him a known name in other parts of the world.”
The musician was one of the themes of social media trends during the Chiefs’ games as they went on to win Super Bowl LVIII defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22. She was also in the middle of a successful Eras tour at the time.
Ticket sales for the Chiefs games went through the roof and merchandise sales skyrocketed due to the attention garnered by Swift being at games.
The Kansas Jayhawks will hope that some of the stardust that comes with being associated with Taylor Swift can rub off on them.
