TikToker Makes Pop Punk Version of Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’, the Internet Is Not Impressed
Is it gatekeeping to want to have Hetfield’s roars instead of high-pitched moanings?
By now, it’s already not a secret that, carried by the popularity of Netflix hit show “Stranger Things”, Metallica have been experiencing a resurgence in young fans, who became devoted to the band and their 1986 masterpiece “Master of Puppets”.Of course that, as new people started to get into Metallica, especially via a very mainstream outlet, part of the old-school fanbase was not enthusiastic, putting on their best gatekeeping outfits. That being said, things hit another level as singer and content creator Kala shared a cover of “Master of Puppets” in the style of pop punk, replacing James Hetfield’s roars with high-pitched vocals, and the iconic ominous riffage with an upbeat sunny equivalent.
As you might have guessed, fans were not thrilled by this tribute to Metallica. Some of the comments reacting to the version were the likes of “How can I unhear this?”, “Please stop”, and “Imagine thinking this isn’t cringe trash”.
The artist, who collaborated on the track with YouTuber Todd Barriage, took advantage of the (mostly negative) hype, and shared the tune with the following caption:
“Stream it below, please show your uncle or any other long-hairs in your family.”
There were, of course, some positive reactions as well, mostly coming from younger fans who appreciated the makeover the track got, and called out the “gatekeepers” who were hating it.
You can listen to the cover below, and let us know what you think in the comments:
