One Raceway ready for racing

One Raceway

For the first time in 768 days and first time in its current One Raceway era, Goulburn will host a welcome return to racing this weekend.

The category cutting the first historic racing laps of the reborn One Raceway thanks to Steve Shelley, formally Wakefield Park, will be the Australian Superbike Championship, staging round 6 of the 2024 season.

Currently Josh Waters leads the standings by 19 points over Mike Jones and Broc Pearson.

Not only is there the bragging rights of winning the first race on the new One Raceway, but there is also a championship to win being the penultimate round of the season.

In addition to the Superbikes, there is Supersport, Supersport 300, and R3 Cup competitors, along with the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup.

There is also a treat for the four-wheel fans with Supercars star Broc Feeney steering both his current Gen3 Camaro and Adelaide 500 winning 2022 ZB Commodore Supercars around the revived 2.2km circuit.

This weekend will be the fill stop in one of the great comeback stories in the recent years of Australian motorsport.

Since it was built in 1993, the famous Wakefield Park circuit had become a favourite hosting all things from track days to what was then called Konica V8 Supercar Series.

But due to an ongoing legal dispute over noise restrictions, the gates were closed in August 2022, leaving a massive hole in NSW motorsport.

However, the track found a saviour in Shelley, who bought the circuit off the Benalla Auto Club and has spent the last 18 months not only bringing it back to life, but revamping it into a new era.

Broc Feeney will drive the 2022 Adelaide 500 winning Commodore.

He has installed a new layouts that can be used in both directions in an Australian first, plus profiled banked corners, new pit facilities and viewing mounds that will be enjoyed by fans this weekend.

All of this will be on show when Feeney and the Australian Superbikes roar around One Raceway this weekend.

The last ASBK round at Wakefield Park was as recently as April 2022 when Jones and Wayne Maxwell shared the wins, whilst the last race meeting was round 6 of the MRA State Championship on August 28 later that year.

But Friday, October 4 will be the start of a new era as bikes hit the track at One Raceway and see a dream become a reality.
