Former third-overall pick Trey Lance is reportedly garnering interest from another pro football team north of the border.
After spending the last two seasons as the Dallas Cowboys’ third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, Trey Lance hit free agency for the first time in his career. Two weeks after the market opened, Lance remains unsigned.
According to a report from TSN’s Dave Naylor, the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders have put Lance on their negotiation list. Naylor noted that Lance’s dad, Carlton, once played cornerback for the Roughriders.
This doesn’t mean that Lance is definitely headed to the CFL, but the Roughriders obviously think there’s a chance at getting him if he’s on their negotiation list. It certainly bears watching, especially since there doesn’t appear to be much interest from NFL teams in Lance.
The San Francisco 49ers traded up via the Miami Dolphins to take Trey Lance third overall in 2021, behind Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Zach Wilson (New York Jets). The 49ers hoped for Lance to eventually succeed the injury-prone Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback.
After backing up Jimmy G in his rookie year, Lance opened 2022 as the 49ers’ starting signal-caller. Unfortunately, Lance suffered a gruesome ankle injury that ended his season abruptly in Week 2.

Lance was a third-overall pick for a reason. He had a dazzling dual-threat game and skill set at North Dakota State, and it’s unfortunate that he never got an extended look in the starting QB spot.
Another NFL team should sign Lance and see if they can maximize his talents. Perhaps he could unlock his potential in a QB-friendly system like Sean McVay’s with the Los Angeles Rams.
