Josh Allen and Khalil Shakir are set up for years of success thanks to Bills’ latest decision

Khalil Shakir

Buffalo Bills News

The Buffalo Bills have made their first major move of the offseason, and boy is it a big one. Wasting no time, Brandon Beane and the Bills front office have gotten a deal done to extend wide receiver Khalil Shakir with a 4-year contract worth up to $60.2 million, including $32 million due at signing.

The Bills have now locked up the team’s leading receiving from the 2024 season, pairing him with Josh Allen as a reliable target for years to come.

It’s a big deal, but one that is completely well-deserved. Since being a fifth-round pick out of Boise State, Shakir has continued to develop into a go-to option for Josh Allen.

Shakir’s presence really began to be felt in the second half of the 2023 season, when, under newly-appointed offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Shakir became an instant impact. Where Shakir benefits this team the most is his ability after the catch, something that he put on full display with a ridiculous catch and run against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2023 NFL Playoffs.

Shakir finished the 2024 season with 995 receiving yards on 94 receptions, including playoffs but what’s shocking is that 704 of his 821 receiving yards came after the catch. His 704 yards after the catch was second in the NFL behind only Ja’Marr Chase. Shakir also displayed his incredible reliability on the season, catching 81.7% of the targets thrown his way, good for the fourth-highest mark in the league of qualified receivers.

The Bills lock up their top receiving option on a deal that shows his value to the team as one of their biggest decisions of the offseason gets put to bed. The team still has work to do, ideally in finding a speed threat on the outside that can take the top of the defense, which would only open up even more room for Shakir to maneuver underneath and continue to be Allen’s top target in a highly-efficient passing attack.
