Golf fans were left unimpressed by Serena Williams’ stint on TGL this past Monday night. Despite her status as a tennis icon with 23 grand slam titles, it appears she has her work cut out in golf.
Her involvement at the SoFI Stadium stems from co-owning the ‘Los Angeles Golf Club’ team alongside her sister Venus and husband Alexis Ohanian. The lineup includes stars like Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Sahith Theegala, and Tommy Fleetwood. The latter was away competing in the Dubai Desert Classic, while the rest played on Monday.
Williams, seen cheering in the stands next to Ohanian, later joined commentators for an interview and imparted her thoughts during the game. But her contribution on the new Tiger Woods concept wasn’t warmly received. Broadcast footage captured her clapping despite a look of puzzlement, and her commentary booth confessions revealed her longing for tennis.
She stated: “I’m obsessed with the sport. I didn’t realize until I was sat here watching golf.” On social media, ESPN audiences didn’t hold back. Tweets poured in criticizing her lack of golf expertise. One comment read, “Serena Williams knows next to nothing about golf.”
Another chimed in with a mix of criticism and amusement, “Serena Williams has absolutely no idea what’s going on and I love it.” On social media platform X, one user asserted, “This Serena Williams interview might have just killed TLG before it even took two steps.”
While another plainly stated: “Serena Williams has no idea what’s going on.” Echoing the sentiment, a different X user commented, “Serena Williams has no clue what is happening.” And they weren’t alone in their verdict as yet another chipped in, “Serena Williams looks awfully confused.”
On a gentler tone, someone else remarked, “God bless her for being there but Serena Williams has absolutely no idea what’s going on TGL.”
When talking about her role in TGL, Williams herself expressed enthusiasm: “It’s so exciting to be here as a team owner and just get a different look at things. “It’s so wild. It’s something that you see a little bit in tennis, and we see it all the time in basketball, right? But we don’t really see it so much in golf. Actually we never see that in golf, right?
“So it’s just so good to kind of see their personalities and just see them shine as golfers as they are, because they’re usually so focused, so serious and so ready. So it’s so cool to see a new aspect.”
Regarding the format, Williams was positive, stating, “I love this format. I think it’s so cool. It’s such a good way to engage the fans.”
